Custom Cedar Sauna

Hand-Built in Portland, Oregon

This sauna is a permanent, architectural structure, designed and built from the ground up for longevity, performance, and daily use. It is not a kit, not modular, and not mass-produced. Every detail reflects the materials, labor, and experience required to build a real sauna that performs properly in the Pacific Northwest climate.

Exterior Design & Construction

The exterior envelope is engineered for durability, moisture management, and long-term structural integrity.

  • Wall System:
Plywood wall sheathing with integrated vapor barrier, paired with a Sturdy Batten rain screen system. This creates continuous airflow behind the siding, preventing trapped moisture, reducing mold risk, and extending the life of the structure.

  • Insulation & Heat Control:
Walls and ceiling are insulated with Rockwool mineral wool insulation for superior thermal performance, fire resistance, and sound dampening. A foil vapor barrier lines the hot room to reflect radiant heat back into the sauna, improving efficiency and warm-up times.

  • Siding:
Tight-knot cedar vertical channel siding, primed on all sides and finished with two coats of high-quality black latex paint for deep color and long-term protection.

  • Roof:
Standing seam metal roof, selected for durability, clean lines, and decades-long service life with minimal maintenance.

  • Window:
Large double-pane tempered thermal glass window, allowing natural light while maintaining heat retention.

  • Door:
Rogue Valley Douglas Fir Full-Lite sauna door, handcrafted in Oregon, balancing light, durability, and thermal performance.

  • Exterior Hardware & Lighting:
Solid brass door handle and vapor-rated exterior light from Rejuvenation (Portland, OR). Brass was chosen to age naturally and complement the cedar and black exterior.

Interior Experience

The interior is intentionally simple, warm, and functional, designed around how heat actually moves in a sauna.

  • Interior Cladding:
Natural wood interior with clean horizontal lines for a calm, modern atmosphere.

  • Benches:
Two-tier bench system designed for proper heat stratification and comfort:

    • Bench length: 6’3”

    • Bench depth: 2’

    • Lower bench height: 20”

    • Upper bench height: 40”

This layout allows bathers to sit fully within the heat envelope while maintaining comfortable posture and airflow.

Heater

  • HUUM HIVE Mini 9kW electric heater

Chosen for its stone mass, clean aesthetic, and soft, enveloping heat. The HIVE Mini allows for both traditional dry sauna sessions and generous steam (löyly), delivering consistent performance without harsh radiant spikes.

Why This Sauna Costs More

This sauna is priced at $35,000, and that cost reflects how it was built, who built it, and the materials used throughout.

  • Not a kit:
This sauna was built entirely by hand, on site, by a licensed general contractor in Portland, Oregon. Nothing was prefabricated or assembled from a box.

  • Commercial-grade envelope:
The combination of rain screen construction, Rockwool insulation, foil vapor barrier, and proper ventilation mirrors modern building science used in high-performance homes.

  • Real materials, not shortcuts:
Solid cedar siding, Douglas Fir door, standing seam metal roof, brass hardware, and premium finishes throughout. These materials are chosen for longevity, not cost savings.

  • Proper sauna engineering:
Bench heights, ceiling height, heater selection, and insulation thickness are all designed to create even heat, efficient warm-up, and a true sauna experience.

  • Built to last decades:
This is a permanent structure intended to live outdoors year-round in the Pacific Northwest. With basic maintenance, it will outlast most prefab saunas many times over.

You’re not just buying a sauna. You’re investing in craftsmanship, performance, and a structure that was built correctly from the start.
